The 365 - 9/16/17 - Day 55

Happy Saturday everyone - I just got back from a morning hike out near Sam Houston Park.  It was a great hike and it was even better to get out of the city for a few hours.  I am still working on the shots from the hike here, but I wanted to post a quick one here for today's post.  As the trail crossed one of the roads, I looked around and saw this view.  In stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of city, these parks are close enough to provide a bit of peaceful serenity without having to commit a full day away.  Best of both worlds.  Enjoy your weekend.

Happy Weekend everyone-  Another week in the books and I am really looking forward to the weekend here.  For the image tonight, I wanted to put in one of the rare color photos I seem to be working with these days.  This spot is a restaurant down in Galveston near the Strand, and it seems to be one of the places that always makes me think about old Americana / Route 66.  I also saw this image in B&W in my head when I shot, but something about the color version always spoke to me more (at least for this image).  So for a brief change in the blog, I'll break from the B&W for tonight and post a color image.  I hope you guys enjoy -

Happy Thursday everyone-  With this last shoot, I have started tinkering again with some of the B&W treatments for my images.  I'm told often that one of the best things you can do in photography is to develop a style.  One that becomes recognizable and viewers can say, "Oh that's a so and so" based solely on the subject matter or the way the image looks.  I have gotten pretty close to what I would call a standard "recipe" that works for most of the images I am shooting these days.  And while that's fun, it is also way more fun to tinker around again with what you think is the best way and explore new options.  Tonight, I was playing around with a fairly standard grab shot from the past weekend.  There were a group of friends knocking a soccer ball around and I got this simple shot here of one the guys juggling the ball on the beach.   I have always liked the bright, washed out look from a lot of beach photographers so I thought I might play around with some Pinhole treatments.  This one here tries to combine the bright and washed out look together with the sharp contrast and falloff of a pinhole camera.  I really liked the way it came out and I think I might tinker around with some more looks in this direction as well as continue to refine what I consider the "standard B&W" you have seen on the blog.

Enjoy your Thursday -

The 365 - 9/13/17 - Day 52

Happy Wednesday evening everyone-  I will admit that posting this 365 blog is a challenge.  Work has started up again this week, and a lot of demands on the schedule keep coming up.   I am really enjoying this whole process though.  In my very first post on this series, I did mention that I was cheating a little bit here with the 365 project in that not every image has been shot that day.  However, seeing as it is my first one, and the fact that this has been a great experience thus far in trying to post something new every day, I am cutting myself some slack. The original purpose of the blog was to create a driver for me to try to get out more often and shoot, and this blog so far has done exactly that.  My camera is with me more regularly and I am shooting both new images all of the time and looking at my old libraries with new eyes and purpose.   So with all that said, I would say that so far, this blog has been exactly what I needed it to be.

This image here was from my last trip to Galveston last weekend.  I was able to drag my sister and her boyfriend out to the beach for one last summer "hurrah."  Enjoy your Wednesday evening!

Happy Tuesday (Belated) everyone - I had a few days in Galveston this past weekend and I got to play with the camera for a little bit.  While my brother was checking out some venues for his upcoming wedding, I was playing around with some experimental ideas.  Here I decided to practice some hand-held long exposure shots.  I was able to get down to a nearly 1 second exposure while retaining some sharpness.  Here you can see my brother "haunting" the staircase across the street from the Tremont House.  I found it a bit funny seeing as the actual Tremont house appears to have a bit of haunted history itself.    Enjoy your Tuesday everyone!
